The Miracle League of the Lakeshore serves children ages 4 - 19 who live with any physical or intellectual disability. Based upon the reality that baseball diamonds are not built for crutches, braces, wheelchairs, etc., Miracle League removes these obstacles and gives children with disabilities the experience of playing baseball. Everyone plays, everyone bats, everyone wins!
Miracle League teams play on custom-designed, rubberized surface fields which accommodate wheelchairs and other assistive devices that can not be used in conventional recreation facilities. The Miracle League is dedicated to helping children: gain self-confidence, make new friends, experience being part of a team, build self-esteem, be treated just like other kids, take pride in their abilities.
Using a “buddy system”, each player is paired with somebody to assist the child in the baseball experience based on their individual ability level. Unlike the Special Olympics, participants do not need to be completely able to do the sport on their own.
Members of St. James along with other folks from the greater Manitowoc area joined together to form a local chapter of The Miracle League. our members continue to be active leaders and participants.
